Description
Derwent River ferry ‘SILVER CROWN’ was built by William Bayes for the O’May Brothers in 1889. Measuring 84.0 x 17.3 x 6.6 feet, the ferry was built at Battery Point, Tasmania.
The model of S.S. SILVER CROWN was made by David O’May in 1943 and measures 1350 x 1330 x 320 mm.
It is displayed at the Tasmanian Maritime Museum in Hobart (Obj. # A_1984_126).
The display case plaque reads, ‘S.S. Silver Crown…following the death of veteran boat-builder Jacob Chandler, the O’May’s went to his successor William Bayes to have their fifth steamer built in 1889. The 46 ton Silver Crown was superficially similar to the earlier Victory, but with a wider yet shallower hull. The vessel served its entire career on the Kangaroo Point ferry service, and was broken up at Bellerive in 1936.’
