Description

Description

Brigantine ‘ZEPHYR’ was built in Sydney, New South Wales, by John Cuthbert in 1866 and wrecked off Maria Island, Tasmania in 1913. In The Hobart Mercury article below, J.J. Roberts, A.B. recounts in graphic detail the wrecking of the ship off Maria Island, in squally weather, and the narrow escape of the crew.

Built in New South Wales by Edmund Wadley in 1874, barquentine ‘MARY WADLEY’ was registered in Hobart, Tasmania in 1888 by E.G. Ford & J. Harris, timber merchants, and served as a coastal trader. She was wrecked off Garden island Creek, Tasmania on 24th April, 1901.

“The Mary Wadley was bound to (sic) Garden Island Creek, and at the mouth of that port met her fate…in gale and heavy sea…” (The Age, Melbourne, 1901)
