Artist’s Note: I first met my client Mr Kerry Trollope at the My State Australian Classic and Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart, Tasmania in February 2017. He had seen two of my paintings, The Boatman and The Master Modeller with the Naval Heritage Collection display, and was interested in commissioning me to paint his lovely heritage motor launch, ALICE MAY, which he’d bought in Tasmania several years before.

Mr Trollope owns an amazing collection of 19th century ‘naive’ marine art , and wanted a painting in similar style. As a budding marine artist, I didn’t like to promise what I was uncertain I could deliver, but Mr Trollope had greater faith in my ability than I did. Added to the brief was the size of the artwork (3′ x 2 ½  feet ), and Mrs Trollope wasn’t partial to the colour green!

All I could do was aim to create a profile of the real boat in it’s natural setting along the waterways of the Ku-ring-gai National Park, as a salute to the ‘naive’ style, but try as I might, there was no getting around the green!
